Verbal Communication
Verbal
Communication is the use of
sounds and words to express yourself, especially in contrast to using gestures
or mannerisms and the sharing of information between individuals by using
speech.Example of this is when you are saying “No” to a person when someone
asks you to do something you don't want to do.
Basic Concepts of
Language
A. Language is made up of
symbols.
Ø They say “Language is symbolic” because it stands
for something else. Symbols can make our
conversation easier by just sending emoticons, stickers, GIF and shortcuts that
symbolizes the words we want to say. We use symbols to represent ideas and deep
concepts.
Example: My friend Jane
texted me and asked me if I have plans
for tonight, then I will send her an emoji (in the picture) means that i'm thinking.
B. Language enables
Internal and External Communication
Ø Communication with people helps us enhance our
understanding and establish harmonious relationships. The difference between
the two is that Internal communication takes place within inside the company
only while External communication occurs between those who are in the company
and outside the company. Examples of people in External Communication includes customers,
investors, suppliers and shareholders.
C. Language is governed by
rules.
Ø Language is a rule-governed system composed of
symbols that is shared by a group of people. A rule-governed system includes
spoken and signed language.
Here are the 4 rules of rule-governed language:
1. Phonological Component
Phonological Component is
all about word pronounciation. It is also
the rule for combining sounds to form words. This rule also gives inventory of sounds and helps us specify sound
change in language. Example is comparison of the sounds of the two
"p" sounds in "pop-up."
2. Syntatic Component
Syntatic Component is
the rule that allows us to combine words
that can turn into meaningful
sentences that uses context clues and synonyms for us to convey the meaning of
the words in the sentence. This rule is all about the grammar of sentences
formed.
3. Semantic Component
Semantic Component are
rules that people have agreed to give meaning on certain symbols and words. Semantic
misunderstandings arise when people give different meanings to the same words
or phrases. Examples of this are
idiomatic expressions like the idiom “hold your horses” this doesn’t mean holding a
horse literally but this idiom means “to wait”.
4. Regulative Component
Regulative Component
are rules for interpreting messages and giving appropriateness in a given
context.
D. Language is based on
social convention
Ø We all have different interpretation of words in
each places. The meaning of words in a language is based on social convention
or the agreement of community who speaks the same language.
For example is the word
“Wala” in tagalog means nothing but in pangasinan it means that it has
something.
E. Language can be learned.
Ø We people can learn different languages through education
by enrolling to some tutorial lessons, watching videos on how to learn a
certain language and socializing with them.
Example: When a
filipina married a man from Korea and their only communication is English
language. Once they are married, The man will bring his wife to Korea and from
there, the filipina should learn their language, culture and their beliefs.
F. Language evolves.
Ø Way back year 2000, We don’t have any names called
for people who likes to take a picture of themselves, but now we already have
“selfie” “groufie” “charot” and popular
word “Jejemon” in which they encode text in the unique way. In our generation
today when you are still encoding your text like this, people will make fun of
you and will call you “Jejemon” or “Jeje” If you cannot read the words stated below,
it says “Hey! Alam niyo po ba kung ano ang ibig sabihin ng jejemon? (Hey! Do you know the
meaning of jejemon?)
E. People, not words,
create meaning
In this vast world there are a lot of things
unknown, things that merely exist. We, people are the ones who give meaning to
the world through research and personal experiences. A lot of things are
circulating around the social world that don’t even exist before like “memes”
this word is just letters that doesn’t have any meaning. Thanks to the people involved in making the word "meme" popular. Meme is now used to justify a funny picture.
Example of meme:
